What is play therapy?
Play is how children make sense of the world. In play therapy, a trained therapist uses that on purpose. Your child might act out a story with puppets, build a scene in the sand tray or draw something they can't yet say out loud, and the therapist uses those moments to help them express feelings, feel safer and practice new skills.
Because it works at a child's developmental level, play therapy can reach kids that talk-only therapy often can't. See our main play therapy page for more on how it works.
Who play therapy helps
Olathe parents often bring their child to us for:
- Big feelings, meltdowns and tantrums
- Worry and anxiety, including a child who talks at home but freezes at school
- A move, a divorce, a new sibling or the loss of a loved one
- Trauma or a hard experience that still shows up in sleep, behavior or mood
- Settling into a foster, adoptive or kinship family
It's a particularly good fit for toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary kids.
Play therapy or PCIT?
Olathe is one of the offices where PCIT-trained therapists see families, so you have two strong options for a young child.
- Play therapy gives your child a safe place to express and work through feelings, with you involved along the way.
- PCIT is for children about ages 2 to 7. Your therapist coaches you live while you play with your child, so you build connection and calm, consistent routines together. Many families finish in about 12 to 20 weekly sessions.
Not sure which fits? Our intake team can talk it through with you. You can also read more about PCIT.
What sessions look like
You'll start with a parent intake to talk about your child's needs and build a plan together. Sessions after that are 50 minutes. For foster, adoptive and kinship families, our Olathe office also offers attachment-focused care. You'll be kept informed, may be invited into sessions and will leave with ideas to try at home.
