Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in Olathe and Kansas City

If your days feel like one meltdown after another, you are not alone, and you are not doing it wrong. Many loving parents of young children reach a point where the usual tools stop working. Timeouts turn into battles. Bedtime takes two hours. You find yourself yelling more than you want to, and your child seems just as unhappy as you are.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, or PCIT, was made for exactly this season. It is one of the most researched therapies for young children, and it works by strengthening the one relationship that matters most to your child: their relationship with you.

What is PCIT?

PCIT is a short-term, evidence-based therapy for children about ages 2 to 7 and their caregivers. Instead of the therapist working with your child alone, the therapist coaches you while you play with your child. In many sessions you wear a small earpiece, and your therapist offers quiet, in-the-moment suggestions. You get to practice new skills with real support, right when you need it.

PCIT has two phases:

  • Building connection (Child-Directed Interaction). You learn simple, powerful skills like specific praise, reflecting what your child says, and describing their play. These skills help your child feel seen and calm, and they often reduce difficult behavior on their own.
  • Building cooperation (Parent-Directed Interaction). Once connection is strong, you learn clear, calm ways to give directions and follow through consistently, so your child knows what to expect.

Families move forward when they show they have learned the skills, not on a fixed calendar. Many families finish in roughly 12 to 20 weekly sessions.

Who can PCIT help?

PCIT may be a good fit if your young child:

  • Has frequent tantrums, meltdowns or aggression
  • Has a hard time listening or following directions
  • Struggles with big feelings after changes, loss or stress
  • Has joined your family through foster care or adoption and you want to build trust and attachment
  • Has ADHD-type behaviors or anxiety that show up as defiance

PCIT is also helpful for caregivers who simply want more confidence and more enjoyable time with their child.

PCIT at Fox Child & Family Therapy

Our approach to every child is warm, playful and parent-involved, and PCIT fits naturally with that. Several of our therapists are trained in PCIT, and we offer it at our Olathe office as well as at other locations. Some families may also be able to do parts of PCIT by telehealth; ask us what fits your family.

We accept Kansas and Missouri Medicaid plans and Aetna, among others. Our intake team can check your benefits and help you find the right therapist and office.

What parents tell us they notice

Parents often say the first change is in themselves: they feel calmer and more sure of what to do. Then they notice fewer battles, more cooperation, and more moments that feel good again. That is the heart of PCIT—helping you and your child enjoy each other.

Frequently asked questions

What ages is PCIT for?

PCIT is designed for children about 2 to 7 years old. If your child is a little older, ask us—we can talk about adapted options or other therapies that fit.

Do I have to be in every session?

Yes. PCIT is built around a caregiver and child together. Your therapist coaches you, because you are the person who will be with your child every day.

How long does PCIT take?

Most families finish in about 12 to 20 weekly sessions. Families move to the next step when the skills are in place, so the length varies.

Is PCIT offered in Olathe?

Yes. We offer PCIT at our Olathe office at 25255 W 102nd Terrace, Suite 200, and at other Fox locations.

Does insurance cover PCIT?

We are in network with Kansas Medicaid (KanCare), Missouri Medicaid plans and Aetna. Coverage depends on your plan, and our intake team is happy to check for you.

Is PCIT helpful for foster or adoptive families?

Often, yes. PCIT focuses on warmth, predictability and connection, which are especially important for children who have experienced changes in caregivers.
