What is child therapy?
When a child is struggling, the whole family feels it. Child therapy gives your child a safe place to work through what's hard, in a way that fits their age, and gives you tools to help at home. For younger kids that's often play. For older kids and teens it may look more like conversation and skill practice. Learn more on our main child therapy page.
Who we help
Families come to our Olathe office when a child or teen is having a hard time with:
- Big feelings, meltdowns, tantrums or defiance
- Worry and anxiety, including selective mutism, when a child talks at home but not at school
- A move, a divorce, the loss of a loved one or another big change
- Trauma that still shows up in sleep, behavior or mood
- Settling into a foster, adoptive or kinship family
Teens: we also support teens with CBT and DBT skills for handling stress, emotions and relationships.
Therapies offered in Olathe
- Play therapy for younger children (play therapy in Olathe)
- Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for children about ages 2 to 7
- Trauma therapy, including EMDR, to help children and teens process hard experiences so they feel less overwhelming
- Selective mutism and anxiety support using a gentle CBT and play-based approach that builds small, brave talking steps. Some of our therapists are trained in PCIT adapted for selective mutism.
- Attachment-focused care for foster, adoptive and kinship families
- Parent coaching, so you leave with tools you can use at home
What sessions look like
It starts with a parent intake, where you share what you're seeing and we build a plan together. Sessions are 50 minutes. Depending on your child's age, you may join some sessions, and when a teen meets one-on-one, the therapist gives you general updates while respecting their privacy. Because a child's world includes more than home, we can coordinate with schools and caseworkers once you've signed a release.
