What is play therapy?

Children aren't born with the words for fear, grief or anger. They show us through play. Play therapy is a form of therapy where a trained therapist uses toys, art, sand trays and games with a purpose, helping a child express what's going on inside, feel safe and practice new ways of coping.

It meets kids at their developmental level and builds connection between child and caregiver. You can read more on our main play therapy page.

Who play therapy helps

Brookside and south Kansas City parents often call us when their child is facing:

  • Big emotions or behavior that's hard to manage at home or at school
  • Anxiety and worry, including a child who speaks at home but not at school
  • Trauma or a hard experience that still affects sleep, mood or behavior
  • The adjustment that comes with foster care, adoption or kinship care

Attachment-focused play therapy

Attachment is a big part of our work in Brookside. Our therapists are trained in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), which uses elements of Theraplay to strengthen the bond between children and caregivers. That means sessions often include you, with playful activities that help your child feel safe with you.

We support foster, adoptive and kinship families every day, and with signed releases we can coordinate with caseworkers and other members of your child's team. Read more about our work with foster and adoptive families.

What sessions look like

Your first visit is a parent intake, where you share your child's story and we create a plan together. Sessions after that are 50 minutes. Your child might use puppets, a dollhouse, art or a sand tray. When a child has been through something hard, our therapists are also trained in EMDR for children. You'll be kept informed and get practical ways to respond to big feelings at home.
