What is child therapy?

Child therapy is care designed around how children and teens grow. We keep it playful for younger kids and practical for parents. For a school-age child, that may mean play-based steps to recognize the worried or angry feelings behind a behavior and practice coping skills. For a teen, it may look more like conversation and real-life problem solving. Learn more on our main child therapy page.

Who we help

South Kansas City parents often call us when their child is dealing with:

  • Anxiety and worry that gets in the way of school, sleep or friendships
  • Selective mutism, when a child speaks at home but not at school
  • Big emotions, meltdowns or behavior that's hard to manage
  • Grief, divorce, a move or another big family change
  • Trauma, or the adjustment that comes with foster care, adoption or kinship care

Help for anxiety and selective mutism

A child who chats all evening at home but goes silent in the classroom isn't being stubborn. Our Brookside therapists use gentle, play-based "brave talking" steps that start small and build. We pair that with parent coaching and, with your permission, help for your child's school, so teachers know how to support those brave moments too. Read more about our selective mutism therapy.

What sessions look like

We begin with a parent intake to understand your child and build a plan. Sessions are 50 minutes. Some time may be one-on-one with your child, and some may include you. When a child or teen meets individually, the therapist shares general updates on progress while protecting their privacy. Therapists here are also trained in EMDR for children, an evidence-based therapy that helps kids and teens reprocess distressing memories, and in DDP for attachment-focused family work.
