What is play therapy?

Play therapy is a form of therapy that uses play activities to help children explore and process their emotions, experiences and thoughts. In a safe playroom with a trained therapist, a child can say with a sand tray, puppets or a drawing what they can't yet say in words.

It works at your child's developmental level, and it builds connection between your child and you. Learn more on our main play therapy page.

Who play therapy helps

Northland parents often reach out when their child is:

  • Struggling with emotional regulation, meltdowns or frustration
  • Anxious, fearful or having trouble separating
  • Affected by a scary event, a loss or a hard experience
  • Going through a move, a divorce or a change in who lives at home
  • Dealing with sensory processing or executive functioning challenges, or a developmental delay

It's especially helpful for toddlers and young children, and for kids of any age with trauma, attachment struggles or trouble putting feelings into words.

Play therapy after something hard

When a child has lived through something frightening or painful, it can show up as nightmares, clinginess, anger or acting younger than their age. Play therapy gives your child a sense of safety and control, with a place to practice choices, problem-solving and calming down.

If you're wondering about trauma-focused care such as EMDR, our intake team can talk through which office and therapist is the best fit for your child.

What sessions look like

Your first appointment is a parent intake, where we learn about your child and build a plan together. Sessions are 50 minutes after that. Your child may build, draw, role-play or use the sand tray, while the therapist guides the play toward skills like naming feelings, deep breathing and grounding. You'll be kept in the loop, may be invited into sessions and will get ideas to use at home. How long therapy lasts depends on your child, and your therapist will share an estimate after the first assessment.
