What is child therapy?

Child therapy is therapy shaped around how kids and teens grow. With younger children we often use play. With school-age kids and teens we may help them notice what they're thinking and feeling and practice coping skills. Parents stay involved throughout. More on our main child therapy page.

Who we help

Gladstone-area parents reach out when their child or teen is:

  • Anxious, worrying a lot or avoiding school, activities or new situations
  • Having outbursts, defiance or trouble following directions
  • Struggling with friendships or self-esteem
  • Feeling sad, withdrawn or irritable
  • Coping with grief, a divorce or another family change

Help for anxious kids

Anxiety in children doesn't always look like worry. It can look like stomachaches before school, meltdowns at bedtime, endless "what if" questions or refusing to try something new. In therapy, your child learns to recognize those feelings and practice small, manageable steps toward the things that scare them. You'll learn how to support those steps at home without accidentally feeding the worry. Read more about our counseling for anxiety.

What sessions look like

We start with a parent intake to understand your child and set goals together. Sessions are 50 minutes. Some time may be with your child alone, and some may include you. With older kids and teens, the therapist gives you general updates while protecting the privacy that helps them open up. Your therapist will give you an estimated length of therapy after the initial assessment.
